How IP Geolocation Works: Databases, Signals & Limits
IP packets do not carry GPS coordinates or physical location headers. Learn how IP intelligence providers combine RIR registrations, RFC 8805 geofeeds, and routing topology to estimate location.
The 4-Stage IP Geolocation Data Pipeline
Stage 1 · RIR & NIR Allocations
IANA → APNIC / IRINN RDAP
Establishes the authoritative country code and registered network organization holding the IP block.
Stage 2 · Operator Geofeeds (RFC 8805)
Self-Published ISP CSV Feeds
ISPs and cloud operators publish machine-readable RFC 8805 geofeed files mapping specific /24 or /48 subnets to ISO country/region codes and cities.
Stage 3 · Routing & Reverse DNS Signals
BGP Peers & PTR Airport/City Codes
Router PTR hostnames (e.g., mum-core-01 or del-gw) and latency triangulation from distributed probes indicate the nearest internet exchange point (IXP).
Stage 4 · Compiled Geolocation Database
Provider API / MMDB Snapshot
Commercial and open databases merge these signals into prefix tables and return an approximate location with a confidence or accuracy radius.
1. Why Different IP Lookup Websites Show Different Cities
Because there is no single central global registry of city-level IP locations, every data provider (such as IPinfo, MaxMind, IP2Location, or DB-IP) builds its own database on its own refresh schedule. When an Indian ISP reallocates a /20 IPv4 pool from a gateway in Pune to a gateway in Ahmedabad, one database may pick up the updated RFC 8805 geofeed within 48 hours while another continues serving the older city mapping for weeks.
2. How Anycast CDNs and Mobile Gateways Affect Geolocation
Two common network architectures routinely confuse naive geolocation lookups:
- BGP Anycast (1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8): Anycast announces the exact same IP prefix simultaneously from dozens of cities worldwide (including Mumbai, Chennai, and New Delhi). A database entry can only list one static country or headquarters for that prefix, even though packets are answered locally.
- Indian Mobile Packet Gateways (PGW / UPF): On 4G LTE and 5G networks, user traffic travels through an encrypted GTP tunnel from the local cell tower to a centralized regional gateway before exiting to the internet. An IP lookup sees the city of that regional gateway, not the town where the user is standing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Concise answers verified against IANA, APNIC, and IETF protocol standards
What is the primary purpose of How IP Geolocation Works?
Explore the data pipeline from RIR allocations, geofeed files, and routing hints to geolocation databases. Every output on IPAddressLookup.in follows IETF RFC standards and cites primary RIR/IANA sources.
Are IP and network queries on this page logged or shared with advertisers?
No. IPAddressLookup.in operates on a strict data-minimization model with stateless query execution, short-lived caching (15 minutes max for upstream RDAP/DNS), and zero persistent user lookup history.
How often is the technical documentation on IPAddressLookup.in reviewed?
All protocol calculators, RFC citations, and Indian telecom notes are verified by the 2026-11-01 editorial and engineering review cycle.
