For decades, network engineers queried port-43 WHOIS servers that returned unstructured plain text with inconsistent field names across registries. The IETF standardized the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP, RFC 7480–7484 and RFC 9224) to provide machine-readable JSON responses over HTTPS, standardized entity vCard structures, and deterministic bootstrap routing.
When you inspect an IP address here, our server matches the target prefix against IANA's IPv4 or IPv6 bootstrap table and queries the responsible Regional Internet Registry (such as APNIC for Indian IP blocks). The returned record shows the allocated netblock range (startAddress – endAddress), CIDR prefix, registrant organization, and abuse/technical contacts.
What IP Registration Records Do Not Show
- Network holder, not end user: An IP WHOIS/RDAP record identifies the telecom carrier, ISP, or cloud provider that received the block from APNIC or IRINN—never an individual home broadband customer.
- Headquarters vs. physical router: The address listed in an RDAP entity vCard is the corporate headquarters of the ISP (for example, Navi Mumbai or New Delhi), which has no relation to where a dynamic IP is currently assigned. Read How IP Geolocation Works to learn more.
